Which AFC North Team has the Best Receiving Corps?

Posted on 03 August 2010 by Gene Winner

All four teams in the AFC North attempted to upgrade their receiving core this off-season.  This past week the Cincinnati Bengals signed receiver Terrell Owens, which some analysts say gives the Bengals’ offense an edge in the division. This brings up a good question: Who has the best receiving core in the AFC North? Here’s a look at each team’s receivers, including tight ends.

Who has the better receiving core in the AFC North? Let us know what you think!

RAVENS:

Anquan Boldin

Donte Stallworth

Derrick Mason

Mark Clayton

David Reed (rookie)

Todd Heap, TE

The team added Anquan Boldin and Donte Stallworth along with resigning Derrick Mason in the off season. In addition, the team drafted rookie receiver David Reed and two tight ends in the draft. If reports are accurate, rookie tight ends Ed Dickson and Dennis Pitta will be factors in the offense.  Dickson has been practicing with the first team offense.  Todd Heap is finally healthy which is huge for the offense.

The Big Question:Much may fall on Donte Stallworth, can the speedy receiver give the offense the much needed vertical threat?

Overall: The team improved from last year with acquiring Boldin and has some serious depth at both wide receiver and tight end position.

BENGALS:

Chad Ochocinco

Antonio Bryant

Terrell Owens

Matt Jones

Andre Caldwell

Jordan Shipley (rookie)

Jermaine Gresham, TE (rookie)

There were questions going into the offseason about the receiving core for the Bengals. The team got busy and added Antonio Bryant and recently signed Terrell Owens.  They also drafted WR Jordan Shipley and tight end Jermaine Gresham, arguably the top prospect at his position.

The Big Question: Can Antonio Bryant fill the void left by T.J. Houshmandzadeh?  How does the T.O. experiment work?

Overall: This is solid group and will pose match up problems for opponents. They’ve added some outstanding excellent talent in free agency and the draft.  Jermaine Gresham gives QB Carson Palmer a weapon at the tight end position–something they didn’t have last year.

STEELERS:

Hines Ward

Arnaz Battle

Antwaan Randle El

Mike Wallace

Antonio Brown (rookie)

Emmanuel Sanders (rookie)

Heath Miller, TE

The big news was trading away their number one playmaker Santonio Holmes to the Jets.  The team added Arnez Battle and Antwaan Randle El along with rookie Antonio Brown and Emmanual Sanders.  Second year player WR Mike Wallace may be emerging as the teams biggest threat.

The Big Question: Who fills the void left by Santonio Holmes?

Overall: WR Hines Ward and TE Heath Miller still gives this unit has capable playmakers.

BROWNS:

Joshua Cribbs, WR/KR

Bobby Engram, WR

Mohammed Massaquoi, WR

Brian Robiskie, WR

Carlton Mitchell, WR (rookie)

Joel Gamble, TE

The Browns were active to some extent picking up veteran Bobby Engram and drafting WR Carlton Mitchell.  It seems they are counting on Joshua Cribbs and the younger receivers in Mohammed Massaquoi and Brian Robiskie to step it up.

The Big Question: Will Mohammed Massaquoi and Brian Robiskie provide enough production for the offense.

Overall: On paper this receiving core doesn’t strike too much fear into the hearts of their opponents.

Laylah’s Take: What Person Thought the Release of the Roethlisberger Tapes Was a Good Idea?

Posted on 10 June 2010 by Laylah Figueroa

It’s no surprise that players don’t like the media…because of things like this. The release of Ben Roethlisberger’s interviews that were conducted along with photos and surveillance tapes were released to the public Wednesday.

How rude are you? Whoever thought this was a good idea has absolutely nothing else better to do.

I say good for the team to completely call out the media and whoever else wants to try to keep this going. They are looking like complete imbeciles and deserve getting shut out.

I couldn’t have said it better than backup quarterback Charlie Batch, he says, “It’s not even something that’s being discussed,” Why? “Because it has nothing to do with football.” There’s no better answer than that!

I feel bad for anyone who has to deal with the ignorance that some people in the media world have to offer.

Laylah’s Take: Leave Roethlisberger Alone Already!

Posted on 04 June 2010 by Laylah Figueroa

I get the whole thing about Ben Roethlisberger violating the NFL’s personal conduct policy, but do we need to continue to drag this out? He made a mistake, now lets move on. His teammates want this, I’m sure he wants this, and the Steelers want this.

I think we’re beating a dead horse here. Let him get back on his feet and show us what he can do as a professional football player.

Ben returned to practices after accepting a league-ordered behavioral evaluation and was cleared by Goodell. The commissioner is still undecided if Roethlisberger’s suspension will be reduced to four games.

The team is happy to have him back and they are all ready to move on from this. I believe Ben will be a definite asset to the Steelers yet again. He’s still a young guy who apparently can bounce back from almost anything and continue to come out on top.

In my opinion, he just needs to be mindful of his actions, because they will all be watching just waiting for you to fail. Sad, but true. Good luck Ben.

Steelers coach Tomlin has options with two backup QB’s

Posted on 19 May 2010 by Laylah Figueroa

Mike Tomlin has declared that he will know his starting quarterback when training camp gets rolling in July, and all indications are Byron Leftwich will be the teams starter opening day against the Falcons at Heinz Field. The move leaves Dennis Dixon sitting on the sidelines, and it’s a move that will likely be well talked about if Leftwich doesn’t deliver on getting the job done.

Personally, I think we should take a poll on this one. Both QB’s have great advantages and have shown in spurts that they are great players. I think in the end Tomlin will know what to do, they always have, and they usually come out on top no matter what. They strive for excellence and deliver nothing less, and they are so entertaining to watch, they have made football what it’s suppose to be over the years.

Leftwich has more experience but seems Dixon can scramble and open up the game more, he has great accuracy and is a better passer, he just needs to learn defenses, which is what seemed to cost him late in his only pro start last year playing the Ravens in Baltimore.

Then again, Lefty appears to play like Ben! He has that universal effect that can accomplish anything and the do anything attitude with plays to back him up. He showed that two years ago filling in against the Redskins on Monday night, and also followed it up with a strong game in the 08 season finale against Cleveland.

But in the end, I feel Tomlin thinks it will be a safe call to start Lefty because he can win a few games and possibly get the ball rolling until Ben’s back under center hopefully in week five.

I like them both, but that’s why coaches coach, and the organization knows what they’re doing.

Dixon – aggressive and eager to win, but aren’t most Steelers players? Lefty – experienced and hopefully ready to go after taking most of the snaps with the first team in training camp and preseason.

They are more than proud to wear the uniforms and it shows. I think no matter what, the Steelers will rebound and dominate this season. They have great options for who’s starting and a great back up, with a team to follow that seems more committed to running the ball more in 2010.

I’d like to see what Steeler fans think, cast your vote on who you think should be the starting quarterback once the 2010 season kicks off.

Don’t get excited Cards fans – Roethlisberger’s not coming to Arizona

Posted on 16 April 2010 by Will Brodsky

File this story by James King of the Phoenix New Times under the “Why Not Go Ahead and Start a Rumor” heading.  Although King asserts that the “blogosphere” suggests that the “Arizona Cardinals are a likely team for the two-time Super Bowl champ,” this could not be further from the truth.  There have been rumors swirling about the Steelers moving Roethlisberger, but there is absolutely no way he will be traded to the Cardinals.

King does note that “it seems that anytime a big-name quarterback becomes available — or in this case is rumored to be available — the sports gossip-junkies turn to the teams with the least-impressive quarterbacks and get the rumors started — remember all the Donovan McNabb talk a few weeks ago.”  The problem is, however, that there doesn’t seem to be any other source that even mentions Arizona as a possible team for Roethlisberger.

As if it wasn’t already clear, the Cardinals announced Leinart as the starter, with Anderson backing him up.  St. Pierre, who still hasn’t officially signed, is likely to be slotted at third on the depth chart.  In addition, the Cardinals have also made it clear they intend to select a quarterback at some point in next week’s draft.  This leaves no room for a quarterback that has shown  a repeated and blatant disrespect for his team’s welfare, league policy, and good common sense.
