Jets the Latest with Interest in Free Agent WR Terrell Owens

Posted on 27 July 2010 by Matt Loede

There’s another team in the Terrell Owens sweepstakes, as the New York Jets are now interested in the free-agent wide receiver according to a report by ESPN.com’s Adam Schefter.

The Jets contacted Owens’ agent, Drew Rosenhaus, and Schefter reports that New York has even gone as far to debate the idea of inviting Owens to training camp.

Also, the Cincinnati Enquirer reported Monday night that the Bengals have extended an offer to Owens and that he and Rosenhaus like the team’s situation. The Bengals are hoping for an answer in the next 48 hours.

Jets Nose Tackle Kris Jenkins Was Thinking Retirement

Posted on 21 July 2010 by Chris Cipriano

The Jets defensive line will recieve a boost this season with the return of veteran nose tackle Kris Jenkins.

However, it was no for gone conclusion that the 30 year old Jenkins would play this season.

This off-season, as Kris Jenkins attempted to return from his second major knee operation, he also conducted an experiment. He told himself, “I’m retiring this year,” and he said he repeated that notion until he believed it.

When a sense of calm enveloped him instead of panic, Jenkins knew he wanted to return to the Jets for his 10th N.F.L. season. He would do so on his terms, for his reasons, extending what he called the “twilight of my career” for at least this season.

“This is the first year that retirement really crossed my mind,” said Jenkins, a defensive tackle who turns 31 on Aug. 3. “You hear people talk about the end, but you start feeling those emotions, and it’s a trip, honestly. You have anxiety issues sometimes.”

He continued: “Look, I’ve been playing football since I was 8. I’m getting tired. Like, I’m not tired of it yet, but I’m starting to get tired.”

The experiment confirmed to Jenkins his lack of career regrets, and he said he decided to listen to his position coach, Mark Carrier, who told him to look no further than the next season.

Jenkins also considered the new direction of his life, including his first wedding anniversary recently and his responsibility to his three young children. All of that played a role, but with training camp now two weeks away, with a season full of promise on the horizon, Jenkins said that one factor, Coach Rex Ryan, registered as most important.

“The biggest thing was Rex,” Jenkins said. “If it had been any other coach, it probably would have been my last year.”

Good thing we have Rex coaching or we could be in big trouble.

As good as it is to have Jenkins back, the Jets need to realize that he is nearing the end of his career and need to replenish the agin defensive line with some young talent.

Mike DeVito is a nice, young player, but other than that the rest of the young players are unproven.

The defensive line should be priority number one for Tannenbaum next offseason.

Former Jets QB Namath and RB Martin Among Those to be in the Jets First Ring of Honor

Posted on 20 July 2010 by Matt Loede

Joe Namath and Curtis Martin are among six Jets greats in the first class of the team’s Ring of Honor at its new stadium.

Weeb Ewbank, Winston Hill, Joe Klecko and Don Maynard will also be enshrined Aug. 16 at halftime of the first game at the New Meadowlands Stadium, the preseason opener between the Jets and Giants.

When Namath made his guarantee that the Jets would beat the Colts in the third Super Bowl, Ewbank was his coach, Hill his left tackle and Maynard his top receiver.

Klecko was a dominant defensive lineman in the early 1980s, and Martin won the league rushing title in 2004.

Fantasy Spotlight: Jets TE Dustin Keller

Posted on 15 July 2010 by Matt Loede

The Jets are expected to have a big attack on offense this season, getting former Steeler Super Bowl MVP WR Santonio Holmes in a trade, and adding more pieces on both sides of the ball. One guy that will be counted on is TE Dustin Keller, and here’s a little fantasy preview of what folks can expect from Keller in 2010.

2009 Season: Keller played in all 16 games and the three post season games, and became a solid target for QB Mark Sanchez, more so as the season went along. He ended the year with 45 grabs for 522 yards and two touchdowns, numbers that are almost identical from the season before with Brett Favre under center. He also is a decent blocker, and recently was ranked 15th among TE’s in fantasy football entering 2010.

2010 Season: Look for just about the same numbers, maybe a tad bit better for Keller in 2010. He is a solid safety valve for Sanchez, but never seems to put up big numbers, and won’t again in 2010. His biggest game in 2009 was against the Dolphins on November 1st when he had 8 catches for 76 yards with a touchdown. If you catch him and start him on one of those types of weeks, good luck. Otherwise, he averaged just 2.8 catches per game, and 32 yards per game. He’ll never be a top 10 TE, but could be a solid backup TE on your fantasy roster.

Jets Unhappy CB Revis Says He Won’t be a Camp Holdout

Posted on 09 July 2010 by Matt Loede

Despite not being happy with his current deal, CB Darrelle Revis says he won’t be a camp holdout – we shall see:

Disgruntled Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis will not hold out from training camp as he seeks a new contract, sources have told NFL Network insider Michael Lombardi. His decision to report when camp begins on Aug. 1 in Cortland, N.Y., is not based on the progress of current contract talks, but rather on the fact that he does not want to jeopardize a future guarantee he already has in his present contract. Revis has plenty of incentive to report. He has the option to void his current contract at the end of the 2010 season, but the Jets have the right to buy back the remaining two years at $20 million, fully guaranteed.

Jets and Pro Bowl LT Ferguson Agree on a New Deal

Posted on 07 July 2010 by Matt Loede

Jets Pro Bowl left tackle D’Brickashaw Ferguson agreed Wednesday to terms on a contract extension with the club, a person familiar with the deal told The Associated Press.

A second person familiar with the negotiations said it’s a six-year deal for $60 million. Both people requested anonymity because the deal had not yet been signed.

Ferguson, selected to his first Pro Bowl last season, is one of the anchors of an offensive line that helped the Jets lead the league in rushing a year ago.

Ferguson was the team’s first-round draft pick, fourth overall, in 2006. He was entering the fifth year of his $37.5 million rookie deal.

He was one of four key players looking for new deals this offseason, along with cornerback Darrelle Revis, center Nick Mangold and linebacker David Harris.

NY Jets Ink OL Vladimir Ducasse to a Four-Year Deal

Posted on 07 July 2010 by Matt Loede

Adam Caplan of FOXSports.com reports the Jets have signed second-round offensive lineman Vladimir Ducasse and according to Caplan, the four-year deal is worth $3.25 million dollars, and included a signing bonus of over $1 million dollars.

Chosen with the 61st overall pick in the 2010 NFL Draft, Ducasse is the highest draft choice to sign a contract. A three-year starter at left tackle at the University of Massachusetts, the 6-4, 332-pound Haiti native developed into a dominant blocker at the FCS level, earning first-team All-Colonial Athletic Association honors after the 2008 and 2009 seasons.

Due to his size, strength, athleticism, and potential, many notable draft experts had Ducasse being selected in the first-round of the 2010 NFL Draft. Ducasse slid to the later stages of the second round, and projected to start immediately at left guard, replacing perennial Pro Bowler Alan Faneca on the Jets’ offensive line.

New Jets RB Tomlinson Predicts a Super Bowl for His Team

Posted on 02 July 2010 by Matt Loede

The Jets have gone out and tried to do whatever they could to buy their way to a Super Bowl this upcoming 2010 season, including signing former Chargers RB LaDainian Tomlinson.

Tomlinson, who wasn’t able to get the job done with even making it to the Super Bowl, is making a rather bold prediction that he and the club will be in the dance over the next two years.

In an ESPN interview, Tomlinson came right out and stated what a lot of Jets fans are already thinking. They will be in a Super Bowl.

“I’ll win a Super Bowl,” Tomlinson said.

Going out even more on a limb, L.T. went out and got a Jets tattoo. “I think I’m tired of being doubted by so many people about what I can’t do,” Tomlinson said. “For a guy like me, my entire career has been driven by that. So I’m very determined to be successful here.”

Heck knows that the Jets have tried everything else to get the job done, maybe Tomlinson will finally get some hardware before he leaves Broadway.

Jets WR Edwards Will Not Face Suspension Over Nightclub Incident

Posted on 26 June 2010 by Matt Loede

The Jets got some good news when it comes to WR Braylon Edwards, as ESPN New York is reporting that the WR will not face a suspension stemming from a misdemeanor assault outside a Cleveland nightclub.

New York Jets wide receiver Braylon Edwards, who pleaded no contest in January to misdemeanor assault stemming from an incident outside a Cleveland nightclub, will not be suspended by the NFL under its personal-conduct policy, a league source told ESPN NewYork on Saturday. It had been widely speculated that Edwards would receive at least a one-game ban for punching a man, an acquaintance of NBA star LeBron James, last October when Edwards was a member of the Cleveland Browns. Instead of a suspension, it’s believed that Edwards will be fined an undisclosed amount by the league. Edwards, who was traded by the Browns a few days after the incident, finished with 35 catches for 541 yards and four touchdowns in 12 games with the Jets. They retained Edwards, a restricted free agent, by signing him to a one-year contract for his tender amount — $6.1 million.
