Holmgren gets his QB…Sort of.

Posted on 08 March 2010 by Al Gordon

It is being reported that the Cleveland Browns have acquired quarterback Seneca Wallace from the Seattle Seahawks. This should really be no surprise to any football fan. Wallace was drafted by current  Browns G.M. Mike Holmgren when he was the head coach for the Seahawks.

This moves means either Brady Quinn or Derek Anderson are on their way out of Cleveland. Which ever one stays will more than likely be the starter with Wallace being their backup.

The pick is said to be an undisclosed pick in the 2011 draft. The Browns currently have 11 picks in the upcoming draft.

Heckert set to become GM in Cleveland

Posted on 09 January 2010 by Al Gordon

EaglesHeckert3

As promised by Mike Holmgren he is setting up the Cleveland Browns front office in rapid fashion. It is expected that current Philadelphia GM Tom Heckert could be named the Browns GM as early as Monday. This all depends on how the Eagles fair in the opening playoff match up with the Dallas Cowboys.

Heckert is no stranger to Cleveland. His father Tom Sr. was a scout for the Browns back in the early 80’s when Sam Rutigliano was the head coach. The younger Heckert has never worked with Holmgren but has worked with Andy Reid who tutored under Holmgren in Green Bay.

The Borowns did interview Will Lewis on friday to comply with the Rooney Rule. Lewis is the current Pro Personnel Director in Seattle but that coild change with rumored hiring of Pete Carroll in Seattle as their new head coach.

Browns Keeping Eric Mangini as Coach to Start the 2010 Season

Posted on 07 January 2010 by Matt Loede

Like it or not, Eric Mangini will get another shot with the Browns in 2010, as today new GM Mike Holmgren announced that the coach and his entire staff will be getting a shot to build on the four-game win streak which ended the season.

“I’m happy to announce that Eric Mangini will return as head coach of the Cleveland Browns in 2010. Over the past few weeks Eric and I have had a chance to talk on a number of occasions including our meetings over the last two days,” Holmgren said in a statement. “I was able to gain some tremendous insight into his thought process and philosophies, and came away from our meetings very impressed. In my opinion, Eric has gained the respect and admiration of players, coaches and others in the organization, and with him continuing to lead the team I feel that we are headed in the right direction. Working together, our goal is to build on the strong tradition of this franchise and help get the Browns back to the playoffs.”

Mangini won over Holmgren with the final month of the season, as following a loss to the Chargers on December 6th, the team beat the Steelers four days later, then topped the Chiefs on the road December 20th, followed by a home win over the Raiders December 27th then wrapped up the year with their fourth straight win, a beating of the Jags last Sunday.

“I want to thank Mike for the opportunity to not only meet with him and share my thoughts and vision on what it takes to lead a team, but also to continue what we started here,” Mangini said in a statement. “I believe we made some real, tangible progress throughout the course of the season, culminating with wins in our final four games. I feel as though the culture and mindset that we established this year have laid the foundation for success in 2010 and beyond, and I’m looking forward to working with Mike and a general manager in making this happen.”

Mangini was granted a second season one day shy of his first anniversary with the Browns, who hired him on Jan. 8 last year. He avoided joining an infamous club with Ray Rhodes, who was fired by two teams after two full consecutive seasons.

The team also will be bringing in a new GM, and that appears to be Seattle pro personnel director Will Lewis. He’ll be here tomorrow for an interview. Lewis has a strong background with Holmgren, working with him in Green Bay and Seattle. After his playing career ended, Lewis was a scout with the Packers before following Holmgren to Seattle, where he joined the team’s pro personnel department.

Holmgren Close To Joining Browns

Posted on 20 December 2009 by Stephen Rhodes

Mike Holmgren

Take this for what it’s worth, but the rejection by the Seattle Seahawks may have hastened negotiations between the Cleveland Browns and Mike Holmgren as Chris Mortensen of ESPN is reporting that Holmgren is very close to accepting the team’s position as “football czar”; the contract in question is believed to be a 10-year, $50 million deal.

When more information becomes available, NFL Gridiron Gab will bring it to you.

Casserly Interested In Browns GM Gig

Posted on 21 November 2009 by Stephen Rhodes

Just as quickly as it was learned that former Seattle Seahawks and Green Bay Packers head coach Mike Holmgren was interested in the vacant Cleveland Browns’ general manager position, now there’s a report from Mike Florio over at Pro Football Talk that former Houston Texans GM Charlie Casserly is interested in the vacancy.

It could be that Casserly’s interest allows the Browns to increase the number of potential candidates so as to not move all the attention on Holmgren. Personally, I find it comical that the Browns would even express even an ounce of interest in Casserly.

This is the same guy who managed to find a way to mess up the Houston Texans by his actions up in their front office. Which is exactly why he needs to remain in the studios of NFL Network, because that’s where he does his best work – which is a contradiction in terms, actually. If Randy Lerner (the Browns’ owner) wants to be taken seriously, he would wise to cross off Casserly from consideration for the GM post.

But regardless of who eventually takes over, he may want to assess head coach Eric Mangini’s situation.

With Bills At 3-6, Wilson Hints At Changes

Posted on 19 November 2009 by Stephen Rhodes

Now that Dick Jauron is no longer the head coach of the Buffalo Bills, there are rumblings – chiefly from team owner Ralph Wilson – that there very well could be changes within the entire organization. Suffice it to say, no one’s job appears to be safe.

According to Wilson:

“I tell you, we have a lot of work to do. We’ve got to revamp and take a look at the whole operation and that’s what we’re going to do.”

He further added that every position within the Bills organization will be reviewed, which sounds to me that pink slips will be issued at the end oif this season. Probably the question that has been asked of Wilson, especially recently, is whether the Bills are in the market for a high-profile coach or retain current interim head coach Perry Fewell. Wilson’s reply?

“It’s not about money, it’s about winning. If it was about money, we wouldn’t have brought in and paid for somebody we know was a great player. Anybody that says I’m cheap is looking down the wrong side of the street.”

I seriously doubt that Fewell will be retained; having said that, here is who is available who the Bills may want to look at:

* Bill Cowher. I don’t expect Cowher to be an analyst for CBS Sports for too much longer. Coaching is in his blood, and I would expect his family to sign off on his coaching in the future.

* Mike Shanahan. Shanny’s on a sabaticcal, of sorts. But you jsut know he has the itch to roam the sidelines again. The jury’s out as to whether his next stop is in Buffalo.

* Mike Holmgren. A perennial candidate, there is the possibility. Yet, it seems to me that Holmgren would rather be on the management side instead of coaching. Time will tell.

* Brian Billick. He needs to be on the sidelines. It wasn’t like he was an unsuccessful coach while with the Ravens. Besides, I am tired of looking at him doing Coors beer commercials.

* Jon Gruden. Chuckie just re-upped with ESPN, so he’s probably unavailable for the short-term future. However, like in any industry, contracts can be bought out easily, so don’t count out Gruden just yet.

Regardless of who the Bills hire, he definitely will not come cheap.
