MMA Maniac Quote of the Week: 08/30 – 09/03

Posted on 03 September 2010 by OJR

Edgar-hearts-penn_medium

Hey Maniacs,

OJR here and it's time once again to pick out the best of the best for MMAmaniac Quote of the Week.  Not surprisingly, we have a very competitive bunch this week.

But before we vote :

Congratulations to last week's winner! In reference to GSP learning something every time he watches A. Silva fight :

Anderson Silva tries to watch GSP fights, but falls asleep in the 4th round every time.

by ViolentMike on Aug 23, 2010 1:37 PM

Good stuff. Now, on to the voting...

1) In reference to the medical suspensions list after UFC 118 :

B.J. Penn Has been suspended indefinately after an examination after the fight showed that he had no heart.

2) In reference to Bisping's tweet re: Sexyama hugging him due to training at Jackson's  :

As opposed to Michael Bisping + Wolf’s Lair = three rounds of circling the wrong direction while running backwards and throwing meaningless pitter-pat strikes with no discernable gameplan whatsoever.

by Jeremyjackson on Sep 1, 2010 12:25 PM PDT

==========================================================================================

3) In reference to one of the regulars being labeled as a Bisping fan and his response:

Of course i do really ;-) Seriously though Bizzzzbing vs Akiyama is a great match up. Huge ramifications for both these fighters as the winner gets a guaranteed shot at Patrick Cote.

4) In reference to the Gray Maynard story about why he doesn't finish:

lmfao lets put it like this gray has finished himself just as many times as he has finished his opponent.

5) In reference to Randy's low single take down of Toney:

UFC Fight Night 22: Forrest Petz is bringing a chip on his shoulder to Austin

Posted on 03 September 2010 by Jesse Holland

Petz450_medium

Props: UFC.com

Quoteworthy:

"Any fight you go into you want to win that fight, it’s important to you. [Foster]’s the type of guy that, even when he’s on top, he’s not looking to lay on you. He’s looking to really press the action. It’s definitely the kind of fight I want to be involved with. But yeah, I’ve definitely got a chip on my shoulder because when this is all over I want to have something I can point to. I want to have accomplishments that are mine, and I want to have a winning record in the UFC."

Longtime mixed martial arts veteran and part-time purchaser for a Northern Ohio industrial supplies seller, Forrest Petz, doesn't want to get bounced from the UFC for not getting the job done. Petz wants to go out on his own terms, but will that motivation be enough for "The Meat Cleaver" to cut his way through the venerable Brian Foster on Sept. 15?

UFC 122: Kyle Noke vs Rob Kimmons planned for Nov. 13 in Oberhausen

Posted on 03 September 2010 by Jesse Holland

Noke-kimmons_medium

Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 11 contestant Kyle Noke (17-4-1) will return to the Spike TV airwaves when he travels abroad to face Rob Kimmons(23-5) at UFC 122 on Nov. 13 from the Konig Pilsener Arena in Oberhausen, Germany, according to MMAWeekly.

Despite getting sent home by eventual finalist Kris McCray, Noke redeemed his stint on the Spike TV reality show with an impressive technical knockout over fellow contestant Josh Bryant during the show's live finale back on June 19.

In addition to his first Octagon win, "KO" is battle-tested, having thrown hands with some of the sport's top names like Scott Smith, Hector Lombard and George Sotiropoulos.

A win over the experienced Kimmons could help him get into the title race sooner rather than later.

Like Noke, "The Rosedale Reaper"is no stranger to combat.

The biggest knock on the grappling stud is his inconsistency inside the Octagon. Kimmons is 3-2 since his 2008 debut with wins over Steve Steinbeiss, Joe Vedepo and Rob Yundt, but has been unable to post back-to-back victories as a Zuffa employee.

Stopping Noke would certainly fix that issue, as well as lead him to bigger and better opportunities.

Headlined by Vitor Belfort vs. Yushin Okami, UFC 122 is expected to feature a bevy of German born fighters -- though no official match-ups have been announced at this time. Stay tuned to MMAmania.com for more information on this still developing fight card.

Dan Rafael's Weekend Notebook (ESPN.com)
Nothing major that we haven't already talked about this week, but always worth reading, and there are some tidbits in there, including Nonito Donaire being set for the Cotto-Chavez PPV, but not against Fernando Montiel (shocker!). The feature is on Klitschko-Peter II, which I think is a fight laying really low, and Cameron Dunkin has a lot to say about Kelly Pavlik.

Watt: Course and distance win for Ricky (Evening Times)
Former lightweight world champion Jim Watt believes fellow Scot Ricky Burns will need to thoroughly outbox Roman Martinez to become Scotland's 12th "world champion." He adds, "Ricky can do it, but it is going to take a career-best performance."

Despite two wins over Takalani Ndlovu already, if Steve Molitor beats Jason Booth on Sept. 11, he'll be obligated to fight him a third time. Ndlovu beat Jeffrey Mathebula on Wednesday. "Who in the hell wants that fight?" wonders Molitor's promoter, Allan Tremblay. It's a really valid question.

UFC 124: Thiago Alves vs John Howard likely for Dec. 11 in Montreal

Posted on 03 September 2010 by Jesse Holland

Alves-howard_medium

Former welterweight number one contender Thiago Alves (17-7) will start his slow climb back up the division ladder when he faces division prospect John Howard (14-5) at the upcoming UFC 124 pay-per-view (PPV) from the Bell Centre on Dec. 11 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

Fighter's Only confirmed the previously rumored match-up late last night.

"Pitbull" was put back on his leash by 170-pound stalwart Jon Fitch at UFC 117: "Silva vs. Sonnen" on Aug. 17. It was his second straight defeat after a torrid seven-fight winning streak that saw him topple the likes of Chris Lytle, Matt Hughes and Josh Koscheck.

While his only losses in the past five years have come to Fitch (twice) and reigning champion Georges St. Pierre, the welterweight division is one of the promotion's deepest, and it could take several wins to once again see Alves challenging for the belt.

Assuming he can make weight.

UFC President Dana White put Alves on notice following his failure to come in under the division limit at the UFC 117 weigh ins. A career at 170-pounds hinges on his ability to continually make weight and to aid him in that goal, the "Pitbull" camp has brought in nutrition guru Mike Dolce.

Also looking to rebound from a recent loss is Howard. "Doomsday" was in cruise control over the past year and a half, assembling four consecutive wins en route to bigger and better things inside the Octagon.

Enter Jake Ellenberger.

The Nebraskan sent Howard home with a technical knockout loss (doctor's stoppage) after three rounds of abuse at the UFC on Versus 2 event on Aug. 1 in San Diego.

No question the defeat was a setback for the rising star, but a big win over a name like Alves could vault him right back into the mix.

UFC 124 will feature a rematch between division champion Georges St. Pierre and fellow Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 12 coach Josh Koscheck. "Rush" claimed a unanimous decision win over "Kos" when they first met at UFC 74: "Respect" in Aug. 2007.

Stay tuned to MMAmania.com for more information on this still-developing fight card.

James Toney set to box on Nov. 5, then back to MMA

Steven Marrocco of MMA Junkie reports that James Toney is planning to box again on November 5 in New Orleans, after which he'll return to mixed martial arts. Toney, 42, was wildly unsuccessful in his foray into MMA at UFC 118 on August 28 in Boston, losing badly to Randy Couture.

Any return to MMA won't be in the UFC, though, according to Dana White.

"I thought we answered this question in 1993, but James came out and he picked a fight," White said. "We answered the question again in 2010. I don't think it needs to be answered again. I don't care if it's (Floyd) Mayweather or anybody else."

John "Pops" Arthur, Toney's long-time trainer, says that's fine, and that they'd like a release from the promotion if they don't plan to use Toney again. Arthur says there are three opponents under consideration for a November 5 fight, which Team Toney always makes sure to note is for his completely irrelevant and ignored "IBA heavyweight championship." Don't expect anyone special, if Toney does indeed fight at all. At best, we're likely to see him take on another shot former name.

Toney (72-6-3, 44 KO) has won his last three decisions in boxing, beating journeyman Danny Batchelder (both tested positive for steroids after the fight), getting a very controversial decision over Fres Oquendo, and stopping club fighter Matthew Greer after being rocked by the no-name in the first round. It's been a long time since James Toney was a top fighter in boxing, and a return to glory is not something anyone should anticipate.
